Residential Schools
CultureA community with shared experiences and a shared manual langage. Deaf people are a collective community while hearing people are individuals.
Deaf people who are proud to be deaf are reffered to Deaf individuals (with a captitol D indicating they are part of Deaf Culture), while people who just have a hearing loss are referred to as deaf. Deaf people prefer deaf people, they do not dislike hearing people, but hearing people tend to pitty deaf people and do not try to understand their culture. Deaf people love social interactions and get togethers- when these happen they can last forever. |
LanguageAmerican Sign Language is a full and complete language, it has its own syntax and grammer seprerate from the English language.
Many hearing individuals believe ASL is just signs in English word order, but it is an entire language. ASL is an entirely silent, visual language that is dependent on facial expression and body language to express a point. |
HistoryAmerican Sign Language dates back to 1814 when the first school for the deaf was founded, and is derived from French Sign Language.
In 1880, Sign Language was almost destroyed due to The Conference of Milan. This determined that only oralism would be allowed and sign language would be banned. In 1970, Gallaudet University declared that sign language was the true language. In 1988, when it was time for a new president to be elected at Galluadet University, a hearing president instead of a very qualified deaf person. After the election, many student and teachers shut down the school to demand a deaf president, which they did receive. |
